'Terrible' - Chris Sutton reacts to what he saw player do in Tottenham v Everton

Chris Sutton has slammed Jordan Pickford’s “terrible” mistake as Everton were beaten 4-0 by Tottenham on Saturday (24 August).

Pickford’s heavy touch allowed Son Heung-min to snatch the ball off the goalkeeper and score Spurs’ second of the afternoon.

Speaking via It’s All Kicking Off on Apple Podcasts (26 August), Sutton has slammed the Everton shot-stopper.

The ex-Chelsea and Aston Villa forward said, “Pickford made a terrible, terrible error but held his hands up.”

Pickford’s immediate reaction after Son rolled the ball home into an empty net highlighted just how poor his mistake was.

The England number one didn’t call for a free-kick or look for another teammate to place the blame on. Instead, he immediately held his hands up and apologised to his teammates.

This was very telling as it proved that the 30-year-old knew straightaway that he was at fault. And in all honesty, it would have been hard for him to argue otherwise.

It was an incredibly sloppy mistake and arguably killed the game off for the Toffees. While they did go on to eventually lose the match 4-0, that mistake from Pickford really did feel like the nail in the coffin for Sean Dyche’s side.

At 1-0 down they were still in the match, but Pickford’s mistake left them with a lot to do and would have no doubt killed the confidence of every player on the pitch.
