Everton have a fresh injury concern ahead of their Premier League opener against Brighton after Seamus Coleman was withdrawn in the first half against Roma.

The veteran Irish full-back came off before half-time of Saturday’s (10 August) friendly at Goodison Park and handed the captain’s armband over to James Tarkowski.

Liverpool Echo journalist Joe Thomas, live blogging the game for the newspaper’s online edition, provided an immediate update when Coleman was withdrawn.

He wrote: “That is a concern to see Coleman go off. Hopefully it is minor – he was able to walk off the pitch unaided. But from the moment he went down there was only one resolution, Dyche immediately signalling – Coleman not even getting a check from the physio, so he knew his game was done.

“He joins an injury list that includes James Garner, Michael Keane and Jarrad Branthwaite, who are watching in the stands.”

Dyche already facing an Everton injury headache?

The one thing every manager wants from pre-season at a minimum is that their squads come through the rigorous preparations unscathed ready for the marathon of a league campaign.

Annoyingly for Toffees boss Sean Dyche that has not necessarily been the case with James Garner, Michael Keane, and Jarrad Branthwaite among the concerns for the Everton boss.

Coleman had a bit of trouble with his knee earlier in pre-season and at the age of 35 there really can be no risks taken with his fitness so it made perfect sense to get him off as soon as possible.

Hopefully the treatment room at Finch Farm can clear up a little bit before the Premier League returns, Dyche isn’t exactly blessed with the biggest squad and will need to count on every member of his squad as Everton aim to improve their league standing after a campaign blighted by off-field PSR issues last term.

In other Everton news, the Toffees want to sign a striker from one of the top-five European leagues.
