Everton have transpired to have made the right call in the summer over Ben Godfrey, as Atalanta look to shift the defender on after just six months.

According to page 63 of the Daily Mail on Tuesday [17 December], the Italian outfit are open to allowing Godfrey to leave on loan in January, with Nottingham Forest and Wolves thought to be interested.

The 26-year-old, who had refused contract offers on Merseyside, made the switch to Serie A for around £10million with a year remaining on his deal, opening up the opportunity to play in the Champions League.

However, Godfrey has endured a nightmare spell, making just four substitute appearances in total and has failed to start a single match – last playing in an 11-minute cameo against Young Boys in a European clash on 26 November.

Everton defence much improved as Godfrey needs new chapter

Godfrey cannot be too far blamed for capitalising on the opportunity to test himself in Serie A, challenge for trophies with the Europa League champions and play at Europe’s top table.

But it has turned out far different to what the former Norwich City defender will have envisaged when he departed Goodison Park after four years and 93 appearances, and Everton have done well to recoup at least some of what they paid the Canaries back in 2020 while also allaying major PSR fears.

Meanwhile, Sean Dyche has once again struck a tune from his defence, who look every bit the solidified unit they ended last season. James Tarkowski and Jarrad Branthwaite have rekindled their central defensive partnership following the latter’s return to fitness.

And that has partly been Godfrey’s setback. A succession of minor injuries have meant he has been unable to get going, to the point he has played just once in Serie A as a second-half substitute.

The Toffees have now kept four clean sheets in their last five, and end the year with a tough run against Chelsea, Manchester City and Nottingham Forest.

In other Everton news, potential January plans under The Friedkin Group are revealed.
