Nathan Patterson has been left in the cold at Everton as injuries have plagued his career but he could be set to be handed a lifeline by Sean Dyche.
The Blues confirmed Seamus Coleman suffered yet another injury setback as he was removed from the Republic of Ireland squad for the upcoming international break.
Everton have lacked depth in the full-back department throughout the campaign, Patterson and Coleman have battled respective injury woes while 39-year-old Ashley Young has held down the fort at right-back.
However, the 23-year-old could be handed the reins upon the return to club football with the Blues back under the threat of relegation and only two points clear of the drop zone.
Nathan Patterson must make a “big impression” at Everton
Dyche is back under the cosh at Goodison Park following the 0-0 draw against West Ham United on Saturday [9 November] and will be forced to go back to the drawing board to rectify the ongoing crisis at Everton.
While it is understood, that the Blues boss will only be removed from the helm in the face of a “dire emergency” [BBC Sport], the prospect is not far off reality ahead of a daunting fixture schedule consisting of fixtures against Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City.
The Toffees will be without Coleman’s leadership in the dressing room and, the situation could descend into chaos should the side fail to return to winning ways against Brentford before taking on the Premier League elite.
Patterson, however, is facing a make-or-break year at Goodison Park and must make a “big impression” this season to win over the Everton faithful – this is the perfect opportunity for him to do just that.
Dyche will certainly be looking for him to grasp any chance that comes his way given the lack of options he has had at full-back this term.
Young cannot carry the burden alone and should not be a regular starter as he approaches his forties, Patterson should be granted the first-team berth while Coleman is out. However, it is up to the Scottish international to earn his place.
In other Everton news, an update on Jarrad Branthwaite has emerged for the Blues as he misses England training.
