Yves Bissouma was hailed as “incredible” by Alan Shearer after his strike that put Tottenham ahead against Everton on Saturday (24 August).

Speaking live on Match of the Day, Shearer praised the former Brighton man for his performance against the Merseyside club as Spurs ran out 4-0 victors.

Although the vast majority of Ange Postecoglou’s men performed to an incredibly high standard, Bissouma was one of the players who stood out ahead of the rest.

Following an inch-perfect pass from Dejan Kulusevski, the Mali international slotted the ball into the back of Jordan Pickford’s net in what was a solid strike.

“The weighted pass into Bissouma is perfect,” Shearer said. “It’s just inviting Bissouma to actually come on and actually hit it and boy did he hit it.

“What an incredible strike it was.”

Yves Bissouma could come into his own for Tottenham this season

Since arriving from Brighton, Bissouma has had quite a topsy-turvy time while playing for Spurs.

There have been times like the Everton game where the midfielder has been the best player on the pitch but there have also been times where he’s been the cause of many problems.

Indeed, Bissouma was absent for their league-opening draw against Leicester after being internally suspended by the club after footage appeared to show the midfielder inhaling laughing gas [Sky Sports], something Bryan King labelled “absolutely ridiculous”.

However, during the clash against Everton, the Mali international was one of the best players on the pitch. and surely won back the trust of his manager.

And, as per Sofascore, he managed to play a total of 72 minutes and scored a goal while he was on the pitch. Across the entirety of the game, he made a total of 86 touches and had an overall pass accuracy of 93%.

None of which were key passes but the fact that he scored a goal makes up for his lack of attacking passes.

Of the seven long balls that he attempted, Bissouma managed to get five on target. Defensively the 27-year-old was also fairly impressive.

He was the most defensive-minded of the three central midfielders and of the four duels both aerial and ground that were attempted, 50% of them ended successfully.

Bissouma’s heatmap shows that although he was the most defensive of the three midfielders, he managed to get forward if and when needed.

His overall performance over the weekend is undoubtedly some of the best of his work that has been shown over the last few seasons.

Should he manage to keep this up across the rest of the campaign, he could cement his role within the squad for the vast majority of the season, so long as he also manages to keep fit.

Yves Bissouma could keep Archie Gray out of Tottenham’s starting 11

One of the most intriguing additions that Postecoglou made to his side over the summer is that of Archie Gray.

The midfielder was brought in from Leeds for a fee worth around £40million. The West Yorkshire-born midfielder starred for his hometown club last term and earned himself a move to the top flight.

While there’s no doubt that the 18-year-old will continue to be played, should Bissouma keep up this form, he might find chances to start hard to come by.

Especially if Bissouma carries on being as strong as he was defensively against Everton.

Sofascore also outlines that the Mali international only lost possession six times throughout the clash and he was also only dribbled past once.

He made two tackles, one interception and lastly cleared the ball on one occasion.

These statistics may not seem like the strongest of performances, but, when compared to the Bissouma we’ve seen in prior seasons, this could be the start of a new beginning, despite the prospect of a contract extension still hanging in the mix.
