'Awful Decisions' - Gary Keown slams Rangers figure in 'Dreadful Mismanagement' verdict

Rangers chairman John Bennett deserves all the criticism coming his way from the supporters, according to Gary Keown.

Keown’s column on page 91 of the Scottish Daily Mail print edition [8 September], also published on 7 September online, brands Bennett’s tenure as one of “dreadful mismanagement” during which he has overseen a period of the club being left in the wake of its bitter rivals Celtic.

The reporter went on to admit it is difficult to see how Celtic’s superiority over the Gers “ever changes now”.

Keown said: “Chairman John Bennett is already getting the photoshop treatment on social media and having his mugshot stuck behind the big red circle with the line through it. And, listen, he deserves it. He’s been on the board since 2015 and involved, to some degree, in all manner of awful decisions.

“With the club still not sure of a permanent return to Ibrox because of construction work, still without a CEO, out of the Champions League, just done with another mess of a transfer window and waving Celtic off over the horizon while firing one of their fans from a marketing role after finding out he’d been on Twitter posting about ‘Huns’, everything has just come to a head.

“Celtic are, once again, miles and miles ahead both on and off the field and it is incredibly difficult to see how that ever changes now. Bennett has been a real disappointment as chairman. Rangers are very much back in the role of bridesmaid thanks to dreadful mismanagement and their fans will be entirely justified in turning their unhappiness into protest given how mercilessly they have been milked by the club down the years.”

Rangers suffering under John Bennett

Whilst on the pitch Rangers have faltered in recent seasons – usually during vital spells in the season in which they have needed to keep pace – it is, really, a by-product of the off-field chaos.

And Keown is right: amid sudden CEO departures; the Ibrox fiasco; the inability to shift problem players from the club and a consequent difficulty to sign the targets Philippe Clement needs, the club has completely stagnated, even regressed. And the other half of Glasgow have taken full advantage and marauded clear.

Those problems are the main concerns but they are just the tip of the iceberg, and the club needs extensive surgery in several key areas.

Last weekend’s Old Firm hammering was a visual representation of that to outsiders who have followed precious little of the Gers’ recent demise.

Bennett had some value leftover in the tank after the events of 2012, but that is dwindling by the day and an illustration of the Ibrox fanbase’s utter disdain for it all came during their clashes with the squad after last Sunday’s defeat.

It’s difficult to see when and how it all begins to get restored back to its former glories.
