Rangers are unlikely to pick up the three points against Aberdeen at Pittodrie on 30 October, believes Steven Thompson.
The BBC pundit is of the opinion that if Gers play like how they did against St Mirren, he does not see them winning against the joined league leaders.
He is also not pleased with Philippe Clement constantly using having new players as an excuse as every manager in every team is dealing with a similar issue.
Speaking on BBC Sportsound, as quoted by the Daily Record, Thompson said: “Not on today’s performance, he [Clement] was more positive there than I was thinking he was gonna be. I suppose he’s got to be, they’ve won the game and in the second half they did improve a wee bit, but it was still not at the level you’d expect.
“He also is quite keen to use the new players card, he used that about three times during the interview there, most clubs have new players, so I’m not really buying into that all that much.
“If they play that at Pittodrie, with how well Aberdeen are doing, I wouldn’t expect them to get the three points.”
Rangers have to beat Aberdeen to prove they can compete with Celtic for the title
Thompson’s scepticism about Gers’ chances against Aberdeen is warranted given their recent performance against St Mirren, which lacked the conviction needed for top-tier competition.
Clement’s recurring reference to having new players as a reason for the team’s inconsistencies might be seen as deflecting from deeper tactical or motivational issues within the squad.
Every manager across various clubs navigates the integration of new talent, suggesting this excuse holds less water, especially as the season progresses.
Thompson’s point underscores the need for the Belgian to extract peak performances from his players, irrespective of their time at the club.
A failure to secure victory against a strong Aberdeen side would not only highlight Rangers’ current limitations but also significantly dent their title aspirations, signalling to both fans and rivals that they might still be a step behind Celtic in the race for the Premiership.
It would also raise further questions about his suitability to manage this club and take them to the next level.
In other Rangers news, a £50m update has emerged as new investment into the Ibrox outfit is understood to be on the cards.
