Chris Jack: Board sources reject Rangers outside investment claim as Dave King rages at 'Puppet' chairman plan

Rangers board sources have rejected claims from Dave King of investor fatigue at Ibrox, according to Chris Jack.

The Rangers Review journalist reported via the outlet’s website on 19 September that those in charge at the club had “dismissed” the former chairman’s stance that only outside investment can take the club forward after expensive projects such as the Copland Road Stand work and Edmiston House.

The update comes as King continued his verbal assault on the current administration, blasting the “faceless” members of the hierarchy who want to install a “puppet” chairman to replace John Bennett, who resigned 14 September on health grounds.

He said in a statement to Rangers Review: “Those same faceless people want the chance to do it all again. When John Bennett took over he tried to turns things around – but had no human or financial resources to support him.

“It is amazing that the same people who got us into this trouble want to continue control by placing, as a professional Chairman, their own puppet – who will have no knowledge of the Club or financial interest in its future. We are sleepwalking Celtic towards title 55, 56 and 57 instead of trying to stop them. This board will go down as an infamy in the Club’s history.

“I estimate that the Club needs a minimum of £50million to achieve our short to medium term objectives but that could never be raised under the present board structure. The funds we need must come from a far wider and wealthier base and from parties that will be willing to invest more (over time) to take the Club forward and to become a modern age football club.”

John Bennett exit sparks Rangers war of words

There is clearly no love lost between King and the current hierarchy, and he isn’t going to give up on his plan to return for two years in Bennett’s place quietly.

He was tipped to face opposition from Douglas Park [Daily Record, 16 September] and is expected to be blocked [Daily Record, 16 September] but has upped the stakes.

In his latest statement he has demanded an EGM to challenge the incumbents on the will of fans, in what could amount to a new power struggle at Ibrox.

Philippe Clement and the players could surely do without yet more uncertainty swirling above them, but the current situation certainly looks like it requires significant change of some sort, so it may have to get worse before it gets better.

King claims there is outside investment interest from Saudi Arabia and the US [The Rangers Review, 15 September], which is likely to sound attractive to a fanbase who have grown used to concerns around the finances and the ever-widening gulf to Celtic.

John Bennett resigned as Rangers chairman on health grounds.

Outside influences wanting in at Ibrox should only be courted if they have the right intentions for the future, as there is nearly always scope for things to get even worse.

But if an EGM is called there might be a significant element of the voters who are disillusions with the status quo enough to opt for a major overhaul.
