Rangers chasing Ibrahim Adel despite signing two wingers already this summer makes sense with Philippe Clement wanting to bring his own people in, says Derek Ferguson.
The Light Blues were “wowed” by the Egyptian winger’s performances at the summer Olympics and are expected to open talks with his representatives ahead of the likes of Leicester and Ipswich, according to the Daily Record on 27 August.
Adel’s “brilliance” in Paris [Mohamed El Gazar, 25 August] helped his side make it to the semi-finals against the host nation, and despite signing both Oscar Cortes and Vaclav Cerny in wide areas Ferguson doesn’t think the pursuit of a third is that surprising.
Rabbi Matondo has been linked to exits to both Leeds United and Blackburn Rovers [Daily Mail, 22 August] in recent weeks so the pundit feels a move is still on the cards, while injury to Cortes also factors in.
He exclusively told Ibrox News: “It’s a difficult one because obviously with Cortes being out injured we don’t know how long he’s going to be out.
“The other thing as well, Matondo comes in on Saturday [vs Ross County] does really well and gets a couple of goals and assists. You wonder if he goes out the door, which could happen because we’ve still got two or three days of this window left, then you would be caught a wee bit short.
“So I get how they’re looking to bring players in. But also I think what the manager’s trying to do is he’s trying to get his own players in.
“Because what he’s had to deal with, this is not players that he’s signed. So slowly but surely he’s trying to get his own men in the door.”

Winger is probably the area of Clement’s squad where there is still the most room to manoeuvre in terms of moves in and out, despite Cerny and Cortes coming in.
The Belgian indicated Matondo would probably stay without a big offer arriving after he scored twice against Ross County [Sky Sports, 24 August], but the 23-year-old is also believed to be on a massive contract for the Scottish Premiership which would always make him liable to be sacrificed to a move away.
Scott Wright also looks like finally leaving for Birmingham [Sky Sports, 27 August] and he surprisingly started the first three games of the season for Clement, so if the numbers are right it wouldn’t be a shock for a third winger to come in, but whether Adel is affordable is another matter.
In other Rangers news, a Light Blues star has made a transfer exit decision after an offer materialised from Europe.
