Lennon Miller accepts that his impressive form for Motherwell will generate transfer speculation as Rangers are linked with a move.
The teenage Fir Park midfielder says he is feeling “confident” after a strong season of developing from a “wee boy” last term under Stuart Kettlewell and exit links would “obviously” follow.
The Light Blues are now showing interest in signing him after sending representatives to watch him in action during preseason [Football Scotland, 10 July], and the 17-year-old is taking it all in his stride.
He said, via Glasgow Times (21 July): “Last season, I was probably kind of tentative like a wee boy, but I feel like this season I have kind of grown up and I have got the leadership skills.
“It can be hard to show that as a young boy coming into the first team, it’s tough because there are so many experienced players there and you are a young boy. But they all respect the young boys, and as a young boy you need to help them as well as them helping you.
“Obviously playing games is obviously going to come with confidence, and scoring the odd goal is obviously going to boost that as well, so I’m feeling confident.”
Asked about transfer links to Ibrox he added: “When you are doing well at a young age then you are obviously going to get speculation. But for me, it’s just about focusing on a Saturday or any game that we play and doing the best I can.”
Rangers have already snapped up Connor Barron
Miller’s form last term quickly generated links to both sides of the Old Firm and saw PLZ Soccer’s Peter Martin (27 February) call for his agents to engineer an immediate loan back to Motherwell if Rangers or Celtic came calling this summer.
He insisted that Kettlewell’s side is the best place for the Scottish youngster to develop into “our next superstar” and cautioned against making a move too early.
Clement has already brought in another highly-rated midfield talent in former Aberdeen product Connor Barron and Ibrox News pundit Derek Ferguson would be delighted to see both secured this summer.
But he too feels the best course of action would be to agree a deal now and loan Miller back to Fir Park for at least another season.
Clement followed up the Barron signing by indicating he was now looking to add experience to his youthful additions [BBC Sport, 29 June] but activity appears to have commenced around Miller anyway.
The Belgian manager has struggled to secure those senior reinforcements as he is stuck needing to sell before he can buy [Rangers Review, 13 July].
But with James Tavernier one of a few names who look like they are closing in on transfer exits the necessary funds to tie up a future deal for the Motherwell talent might soon be available.
In other Rangers news, a Light Blues attacker has agreed a contract to leave for Europe if the clubs can settle on a multimillion pound fee.
