Derek Ferguson dubbed Vaclav Cerny “emotional” because of the way the Rangers ace celebrated his first goal in the 2-0 win against St Johnstone on Sunday (6 October).
The loanee winger has come under pressure recently, especially after blazing a clear chance over the crossbar against Lyon in the Europa League, but he looks to be fighting back.
Despite the poor moment against tough Ligue 1 opposition, Philippe Clement has continued to keep faith in the 26-year-old, and Cerny’s appreciation was obvious in his celebration during the 2-0 win at Ibrox.
Speaking live via BBC Sportsound [6 October, 8:43pm], Ferguson said: “Cerny seems quite an emotional guy.
“He made a beeline to the manager and he likes a cuddle. Obviously appreciates him sticking with him.”
Vaclav Cerny silences doubters with Rangers stunner v St Johnstone
Cerny clearly has an ability for the spectacular, but his confidence was at an all-time low after missing an open goal against Lyon on Thursday (3 October).
The missed chance is unlikely to have had a telling say on the European clash, with the Gers totally out-classed by Rayan Cherki, Alexandre Lacazette and Malick Fofana, but it certainly didn’t help.
On loan from Wolfsburg, Cerny created a similar goal during the 2-1 win over Motherwell in August, having cut inside off the right-hand side, unleashing a strike with his left foot into the far corner.
Much like Arjen Robben used to do for Bayern Munich, most players know what the player wants to do on the pitch, but it is a completely different task attempting to stop it from happening.
Cerny is almost definitely back in the good books at Ibrox after netting twice against the Saints, with the match likely one of those that the Gers may not have capitalised upon in the past.
A few more of those moments and Clement will struggle to find a reason to drop him from the starting XI as the campaign trundles on.
