Everton receive new 8-figure transfer bid amid huge offer stance - report

Manchester United have made their opening bid to sign Jarrad Branthwaite from Everton, according to the Daily Mail.

Simon Jones reports for the paper’s website on 14 June that the offer is worth £45million and is expected to be rejected by the Toffees who don’t want to sell the defender.

Despite this there is a “recognition” at Goodison Park that a “huge offer” would have to be considered in light of the financial situation the club is faced with.

The Times reported on 13 June that personal terms on a £150,000-a-week deal had been agreed with Branthwaite’s representatives and Everton were holding out for more than £70m, while higher asking prices have been quoted elsewhere.

According to the Mail that context means United will have to be “wary” of FFP rules if they are to negotiate over the Toffees centre-back, and the process is likely to be slow and complicated.

Everton expected to reject bid from Old Trafford

It is no surprise that an opening bid hasn’t come in anywhere near what Branthwaite’s asking price is, such is the way with transfer deals of this size.

If subsequent bids increase in size sufficiently then it might mean there are genuine negotiations going on that could lead to a deal.

But the suggestion that United believe a bargain is possible thanks to financial uncertainty at Goodison Park [Mirror, 14 June] versus the claim at Everton that they are not obliged to sell for cheap could lead to a stand off.

The club have rushed through a cut-price sale prior to the end of the accounting period before when Richarlison left for Tottenham and it ultimately didn’t prevent them falling foul of profit and sustainability rules.

Nottingham Forest did the opposite with Brennan Johnson and also ended up in breach so if the Toffees are facing the threat of a third spending charge they would be in a no-win situation.

Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite
Jarrad Branthwaite thrived at Everton last season but missed out on the England Euro 2024 squad.

So fans will be sincerely hoping that the apparent resolve to hold out for what they think Branthwaite is worth is based on solid foundations.

And with others linked to permanent exits such as Ben Godfrey and Amadou Onana there remain other potential avenues to help balance the books rather than sacrifice their prized asset.

In other Everton news, Sky Sports have shared an “extreme” Toffees transfer update in the race to make a new permanent signing.
