Wolves have joined Everton in the race to sign Lyon defender Jake O’Brien, according to The Sunday Mirror.

The newspaper reported in its print edition (14 July, page 74), that both the Premier League sides believe the £30m asking price is too high.

Crystal Palace have a sell-on clause on O’Brien which has affected Lyon’s price tag on the centre-back.

West Ham and Nottingham Forest are also in the race, but the Blues value him at £20m (Yahoo Sports, 8 July).

Will Everton walk away from Jake O’Brien?

Everton are not in a position to walk away from a deal for O’Brien and should be in pole position to sign the centre-back despite Premier League interest in the defender.

Wolves will potentially look elsewhere and look to secure a deal for David Carmo of Porto instead, and West Ham have already signed Max Kilman from Wolves for £40m (The Guardian, 6 July).

The Blues have already sold Ben Godfrey to Atalanta, with Mason Holgate also expected to leave Goodison Park this summer, a centre-back is a priority for Sean Dyche.

Amadou Onana’s impending sale to Aston Villa for £50m (BBC Sport, 13 July), will provide Everton with the funds needed to secure the deal for O’Brien and help the club hold on to Manchester United target Jarrad Branthwaite.

The money will go towards complying with Profit and Sustainability rules, but the Blues should invest the outlay in O’Brien.

The 23-year-old would provide healthy competition for James Tarkowski for a first-team spot alongside Branthwaite.

He enjoyed a stellar debut season in France, notching five goals and two assists in 32 Ligue 1 appearances.

With the other interested Premier League sides focussing elsewhere, Everton need to capitalise and bring O’Brien to Goodison Park this summer.

In other Everton news, one player is now destined for Villa move after a £13.5m development emerged.
