'Exceptional': Gareth Southgate says England player Arsenal want to sign has been absolutely immense at Euro 2024

Gareth Southgate has hailed a rumoured Arsenal target after England defeated Slovakia 2-1 at Euro 2024, according to a recent report.

England scraped past Slovakia in the last 16 to set up a quarter-final tie against Switzerland on Saturday.

It certainly wasn’t a convincing performance by any means but one player was singled out by Southgate in a glowing report.

Gareth Southgate says Marc Guehi has been absolutely ‘exceptional’

Southgate took to the media post-match and hailed Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi for his excellent display.

“He has been exceptional,” the England boss told reporters, via BeanymanSports.

“We obviously now lose him for the next game, but he is a young defender that we have enormous belief in and he justified that with his performances in this tournament.

“He was another one that was out on his feet before the start of extra time, but we managed to keep him going and he sacrificed for the team.”

Guehi has been linked with a move to The Gunners in recent weeks and after his Euro 2024 showings, they may face stiff competition for his signature with Manchester United potentially entering the race.

Arsenal will have to outlay substantial fee for Marc Guehi

A £60m price tag has been mooted amidst interest in Guehi so any forthcoming deal certainly won’t come on the cheap.

The 23-year-old has also given no indication that he’d even be willing to depart The Seagulls, so it remains to be seen if he’d entertain an approach from Arsenal.

Palace have him under contract at Selhurst Park until 2026, so they may consider sanctioning a sale this summer while his valuation is at an all-time high.

This time next year, he won’t command as high a fee as now, so perhaps all the logistics point towards a summer exit.
