'Fill the void' - Pundit backs Tottenham to sign England int'l as star linked with summer exit

Tottenham could look to sign Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite as a replacement for Cristian Romero this summer, according to Alan Hutton.

Ange Postecoglou is understood to be eager to add to his squad during the summer transfer window and while most expect Spurs to recruit in the forward areas, they have been credited with an interest in Branthwaite [Daily Mail, 18 May].

Although the Lilywhites had a settled centre-back pairing of Micky van de Ven and Romero last season, Tottenham News understands that PSG are among a number of clubs interested in signing the Argentine defender.

While Hutton doesn’t want to see Romero depart North London this summer, he does admit that Branthwaite has what it takes to come in and “fill the void” that would be left in the heart of Postecoglou’s defence.

“I feel at times they’ve been light across the back four,” Hutton exclusively told Tottenham News.

“When you look at the starting back four, if any of them get injured or they’re missing for any length of time, it feels like the boys that are coming in aren’t quite up to that standard.

“To have someone in the door with that potential, who has the potential to be a regular starter for England moving forward, I think could be a great deal because I think he did really well last season.

“There’s talk that Romero could be on the move so there are a few things in the pipeline that might lead towards them going to somebody like that.

“As I said, he’s got a lot of potential and he would come in and fill the void at centre-half.”

Will Everton sell Jarrad Branthwaite to Tottenham or Manchester United in summer transfer window?

Centre-back will not be the top priority on most Spurs fans’ shopping lists, but if PSG or any other European giant acts on their interest in Romero, Postecoglou and Daniel Levy will have to move quickly to secure a replacement.

Radu Dragusin was signed to be an alternative option to the defensive pair, but he hasn’t shown enough in his brief Spurs career so far to suggest that he could start week in, week out to help the Lilywhites break into the top four.

Branthwaite has been excellent in his breakthrough season at Goodison Park and with the right coaching and guidance, the 22-year-old England international would be able to make the step up to Spurs with relative ease.

Manchester United clearly believe he has what it takes to help them book their place in the Champions League next season.

Although Spurs’ interest hasn’t been as concrete as the Red Devils, they cannot miss their chance to jump to the front of the queue this summer.
