Rangers’ 1-1 draw with Dundee United on Saturday was among the many games that should have been called off, according to journalist Bill Leckie.
Kick-off was initially pushed back to 3:45pm on Saturday afternoon (23 November), then there was a 10-minute radio silence before the match actually got underway at Ibrox.
The Scottish Premiership’s decision-makers have been criticised for allowing matches to go ahead in the first place with dangerous weather conditions wrecking havoc with travel plans.
Leckie, writing for The Scottish Sun [24 November], accused the league of not caring about fan, player or club staff safety and took exception to the lack of communication in particular, saying: “I’ll make my feelings on Saturday’s fiasco of a fixture list clear – every game should’ve been ‘Aff’ at first light of a frozen Saturday morning.”
Of the kick-off time being slowly pushed back, Leckie said: “Tell us why, for the first time I can ever remember, referees were told to push kick-offs back as far as need be rather than making early calls.
“Maybe even just say well done to all those volunteers battling, many of them in vain, to try to get a ball kicked. You know, show a bit of leadership.”
Rangers draw leaves Philippe Clement out in the cold
On the pitch, Philippe Clement faces an uphill struggle to stay in the dugout at Ibrox.
The Belgian manager finds his side third in the Scottish Premiership, 11 points behind leaders Celtic and eight behind second-place Aberdeen.
Reports suggesting that he had been sacked on Sunday (24 November) were wide of the mark but it is surely only a matter of time before the Gers are looking for a new head coach.
The Light Blues are set to head into a new era off of the pitch with two new additions to the boardroom. However, it is unlikely that Clement will lead the club into that.
If anything, the behind-the-scenes changes are made, that will seal Clement’s fate rather than turn his fortunes around.
He is out in the cold at Ibrox, with supporters and the board running out of patience with the Belgian’s stint in the dugout.
