Gary Neville was as stunned as the Man City fans after “brutal” Pedro Porro made it 3-0 to Tottenham at The Etihad.

The visitors enjoyed an excellent first-half in that match, with a double from James Maddison putting them 2-0 up at the break.

Spurs then took full control of the game shortly after the break. The excellent Dejan Kulusevski was again influential, finding space to play the ball deep into the area, finding Dominic Solanke.

He then laid it off for Porro to curl home inside the area, against the side he never played for during a three-year spell with them between 2019 and 2022, leaving Neville aghast.

Reacting to it live on commentary for Sky Sports (6.44pm) he asked: “What are we watching?

“Kulusevski, that is special on that far side… he picks it up with loads of City players around him, nutmegs one, goes past another, and a little one-two with Son, he’s away.

“Maybe just overhits this pass to Solanke but you want players sprinting forward, you want players in support, and that’s what Spurs had, and then whip from Porro. As it comes back to him, brutal, the finish.

“Absolute shell shock this stadium, they can’t believe what they’re watching.”

For many reasons, this is a moment that everyone connected with Spurs will have enjoyed immensely.

This feels like being something of a statement from Ange Postecoglou’s side, in a season where the Tottenham boss has started to come under sustained pressure.

With another win over a previously dominant Man City – after the Carabao Cup success recently – this will only increase the belief that they can enjoy tangible success this season.

Given he never got an opportunity while he was on the books at the Etihad, Porro will surely have taken some satisfaction in getting one over on his former club as well.

While he is not one of those defenders who never scores, the quality of the strike will have been extremely pleasing as well.

Tottenham therefore, will surely be excited to see just how much they can take from this performance going forward, and Porro will no doubt feel the same from an individual perspective too.
