'Great Signing' - Pundit delighted as Rangers chase deal for Scotland's 'Best Player'

Kenny McLean would be a “great signing” for Rangers and could be a valuable senior presence to help guide the younger new arrivals, says Derek Ferguson.

The former Ibrox midfielder spoke to some Scotland internationals prior to the start of Euro 2024 who instantly named the Norwich captain the best player in Steve Clarke’s squad.

Philippe Clement’s side are interested in securing the 32-year-old this summer, according to the Daily Record on 24 June, with some surprise at indications that a move was already on the way just a week later [Rangers Review, 1 July].

Progress has slowed since then but a deal could still be in the offing [Rangers Review, 5 July], and Ferguson is convinced it would make perfect sense.

He exclusively told Ibrox News: “Personally I think he’d be a great signing, the reason being I spoke to a couple of Scotland players just before they headed out to the Euros and asked them a question: ‘Who’s the best player in the squad?’ Kenny McLean came up from the two boys right away.

“So in this day and age, he’s a fit boy, he’s had a tremendous season last year in the Championship with Norwich, he’s Player of the Year, he starts all the way up there.

“We’re led to believe he’s got an inkling towards Rangers so they all say, he’s a Rangers man. I think that helps.

“He’s a fit boy, I don’t think he’s had many injuries during his career, and these guys that play in certain roles, he’s been playing in a slightly deeper role, I could do that for fun.

“At Aberdeen it was Derek McInnes who took him and Derek McInnes raved about him. I think he’s a real good player. He would love that scenario if he was to get that move and with the amount of youngsters that we’re bringing in there’s a lot to like, don’t get me wrong, but sometimes you need older heads there to guide them.

“He would be a good signing for Rangers for me.”

Connor Barron
Connor Barron is Rangers’ only new signing in central midfield so far this summer.

Kenny McLean could join Connor Barron in Rangers midfield

There is little dispute about McLean’s ability after a stand-out season in England, and his Light Blues allegiances make a deal all the more likely, so the prospect of pairing him with former Aberdeen youngster Connor Barron at Ibrox is an attractive one.

But his age and the potential cost of the move for a key man at Norwich made the news that he was a target somewhat unexpected.

How far the budget stretches is yet to be determined, although John Bennett has made clear to Clement that money will be spent [Daily Record, 14 June], so if the numbers are right McLean could follow Todd Cantwell and Kieran Dowell from Carrow Road to Glasgow.

In other Rangers news, the Light Blues want to sign an “unbelievable” talent and have made moves already during preseason.
