John McGinn believes the Rangers supporters are desperate for “a spark” and isn’t surprised by the eight-point gap to Celtic in the Scottish Premiership.
The Gers lost further ground in the SPFL after the 1-1 draw against Dundee United on Saturday [23 November], relying on Vaclav Cerny to salvage a share of the spoils after Sam Dalby opened the scoring at Ibrox.
Aston Villa star McGinn thinks the supporters are ready to move on from Philippe Clement, speaking on The Scottish Football Social Club [25 November, 26:05] and believes the “empty seats” at Ibrox is a telltale sign of the atmosphere at the Gers.
He said: “No, I am not after watching some of the games they have played in – There have been games I have watched that I never thought they could break a team down.
“I haven’t seen a lot of the games, but what I could see is all the empty seats and I think the fans at Rangers are loyal, it doesn’t matter what division they were in, so I think they have had enough and are looking for a spark or something different.”
Philippe Clement is hanging on by a thread at Rangers
The Belgian has been intensely scrutinised with each passing match at Rangers this year as his long-awaited dismissal draws near.
Patrick Stewart and Malcolm Offord have arrived at Ibrox as new chief executive officer and club chairman, respectively [Rangers Review], as the Glaswegian outfit fit the final pieces of the puzzle together for a new-look regime.
Now, with an established hierarchy in place for the Gers, Clement’s tenure is a question of “when rather than if” he is sacked as the pair look to stamp their mark in Glasgow and earn some goodwill points with the supporters.
The 11-point gap between themselves and Celtic in the SPFL is insurmountable by all accounts, and in November, the domestic campaign is undoubtedly a right-off for the Light Blues this year.
Therefore, this is the perfect time for Rangers to make the necessary alterations ahead of a new era at Ibrox, and whoever is selected to succeed Clement can spend the rest of the season stamping their mark ahead of a reset next year.
However, the Gers have remained competitive in the Europa League and are on track to secure qualification to the knockout rounds but, unfortunately for Clement, his results have dissipated all remaining hope in his abilities and rightfully so, if he cannot overcome Dundee United at home, what chances does he have against the likes of Tottenham and Manchester United?
In other Rangers news, the Light Blues are ready to sell Ianis Hagi in £1.6m deal according to a family friend.
