The Premier League is in a lose-lose position when it comes to Manchester City and their legal case owing to the Everton verdict last season, Joe Thomas has said.
The Toffees were deducted a total of eight points by the Premier League last term, and though this saw them thrown into the dreaded relegation battle, they eventually finished 14 points above the dropzone.
There is a general consensus that the Merseyside club were used to make an example out of, with Nottingham Forest also deducted points, and now the reigning Premier League champions must answer to 115 charges.
Writing for the Liverpool Echo on Saturday (14 September), Thomas said of the City case: “It has the potential to become a profound moment in world sport and, to some extent, there is no victory on offer to the Premier League.
“Should it win its case then the verdicts will undermine the integrity of a competition City have dominated for years. Should the Premier League lose its case then its own authority will be fundamentally damaged. And any result will be set against the treatment dealt to Everton.”
Manchester City to be punished after Everton saga?
The Premier League lost all respect from Evertonians after many fans felt their club was being targeted while giants like Man City were left to escape punishment.
However, with so many more charges to delve into, it is understandable why it has taken so long for a date to be set for their case to be heard.
Given how harshly the Toffees were treated for their breaches, potential punishments mooted have ranged from anything from a small points deduction to National League relegation, among the fans anyway.
Fans are frustrated and angry, and rightly so, and the Premier League risks a complete fallout with the division’s current clubs if Man City manage to avoid punishment due to their stature and money.
If the Premier League is attempting to make the division a fair fight for all teams, all teams must be treated exactly the same, not dependent on the size of the club or popularity whatsoever.
As Thomas says, Everton will be watching closely as Man City prepare to go head-to-head with the Premier League.
In other Everton news, Alan Myers shares the likelihood of John Textor’s takeover to be completed as “twist” mooted.
