Journalist reacts to 'Ridiculous' player bid Everton have received

Manchester United have been slammed by journalist Matt Jones over their initial bid for Everton star Jarrad Branthwaite early in the summer transfer window.

The Red Devils have submitted an offer for the defender which was almost instantly rejected by the Toffees, who could be holding out for up to £70million.

In a column for the Liverpool Echo (21 June), Jones has criticised Man United for their bid and has revealed how Everton reacted.

He said: “A ridiculous £35million bid for Jarrad Branthwaite was treated with the disdain it deserved.

“Everton have stood firm on Branthwaite for now, it would not be a shock to see a sizeable offer lodged for him.”

After a superb campaign in the Premier League, there is no surprise that there is plenty of interest in signing the Englishman.

Alongside James Tarkowski and Jordan Pickford, the Toffees had a solid base to their side which they could build from.

This helped Sean Dyche to avoid relegation with time to spare in a positive end to the season compared to other years.

As a left-footed centre-back, Branthwaite is a rare commodity and as a result, is appealing to the likes of Manchester United this summer.

Everton needs to maintain their stance on his price tag throughout the transfer window to get the deserved value for the 21-year-old.

This would result in a win-win situation for the Toffees as they could ease PSR concerns with a sale or they get to keep their star.

It is unclear whether or not they will be able to keep hold of Branthwaite, but fans will certainly be hopeful that they can.
