Keith Jackson believes Todd Cantwell would have made Rangers better this season.

The midfielder left to join Blackburn Rovers late in the summer window for around £650,000 [The 4th Official, 31 August] after handing in a transfer request.

Speaking on the Daily Record’s Hotline Live (21 October), Jackson shared his verdict on the impact Cantwell could have had on the Gers this season.

“I’ve really been struggling to see what it is that he’s [Clement] trying to achieve with this team,” he said.

“But I also then look back at the fallouts that there has been.

“About losing a player like Todd Cantwell for buttons, now what anyone thinks of Todd Cantwell, he makes that starting XI better, there’s no question in my mind about that.”

Rangers and Philippe Clement need to step things up a gear

This season, Rangers have been one of the most underwhelming teams in the Scottish Premiership, aside from Hearts.

Before their 4-1 loss against Lyon in the Europa League, things seemed to be going in an upward trajectory at Ibrox, but the loss at Kilmarnock has taken them back to square one.

Many of the Gers’ performances have been poor this season but their loss against Kilmarnock on Sunday (20 October) was one of their worst outings of the term.

With zero creativity anywhere in the squad at Rugby Park, it’s easy to see how Cantwell could have improved things, but he did tend to go missing.

Clement had his Ibrox stay extended at the end of the summer transfer window and many have mooted that the club might not be able to afford to sack the Belgian even if this level of performance continues.

Things have only gone from bad to worse lately and if the Gers lose against Aberdeen on 30 October, Chris Sutton believes it’s hard to see how John Gilligan would be able to keep him in his role for much longer.

In other Rangers news, Keith Jackson has shared his prediction for the Europa League clash against FCSB.
