Bryan King is surprised that Tottenham midfielder Pierre-Emile Højbjerg has been unable to secure a Premier League transfer.

The ex-Spurs scout has suggested a newly promoted side could have benefited from signing the Dane.

It comes after Fabrizio Romano reported via X (20 July) that Højbjerg has agreed terms to join Olympique de Marseille as the French club close in on a transfer agreement with Tottenham.

And King – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – is slightly surprised by this development.

“He will be playing regular football in France,” King said.

“Højbjerg is at an age where there won’t be too many more big moves in the pipeline. Therefore, if he can secure this transfer that would be brilliant for him.

“However, I am shocked that a Premier League club hasn’t come in for him, especially a newly-promoted one.

“He is an experienced, international footballer and he definitely has quality.”

It won’t come as much of a surprise to supporters that Højbjerg is leaving Tottenham.

After starting just eight Premier League matches under Ange Postecoglou it became pretty clear that that the midfielder had no future in North London.

Therefore, a move away from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is best for all parties involved. However, some fans might be surprised that the 28-year-old hasn’t secured a Premier League switch.

Højbjerg has played more than 250 matches in top-flight English football and could have proved a useful addition for a team playing lower down in the league.

Perhaps the player himself wanted a new challenge in a new country.

Either way, Højbjerg has been a fantastic servant for Spurs, and he will no doubt leave the club with the best wishes of everybody in North London.

In other Tottenham news, the club have been backed to agree a cut-price deal for a £60million forward.
