'Lazy' - Michael Stewart fumes at Rangers star on BBC after 3-3 draw v Hearts

Michael Stewart slammed Todd Cantwell for his “lazy” play as Rangers disappointingly drew 3-3 at Hearts on Saturday (18 May).

The Gers were in action for the first time since they were beaten to the Scottish Premiership title by Celtic as Philippe Clement took his side to the Tynecastle Stadium for the final match of their league campaign.

It was the hosts who struck first, as Lawrence Shankland netted his 31st goal of the season during the first half, and Stewart was less than impressed by Cantwell’s role in the build-up to the goal.

Speaking on BBC Sportsound (1:22 pm, 18 May), the ex-midfielder said, “It was a cheap turnover, I think it was Cantwell who gives away a lazy ball.”

It is fair to say that Cantwell has been subject to a lot of ridicule as of late.

While some supporters might suggest the criticism has been a little bit overdone, the forward keeps giving pundits a reason to have a go at him.

He did make up for his mistake with a goal in the second half, but he still needs to up his performance levels, and it is not just him.

A lot of players at Ibrox need to start doing their talking on the pitch otherwise Celtic will continue to beat them to title after title.

This most recent success is the Hoops’ third consecutive Scottish Premiership title, and Rangers will be keen to prevent their Glasgow rivals from making it four in a row next season.

While Cantwell’s lazy play against Hearts in this particular match might not mean anything in the grand scheme of things, the 26-year-old must avoid making a habit of these mistakes next year.

This league season is now done and dusted, and the Gers must make sure they are ready to go again come August.
