Manchester United are out of the Carabao Cup at the quarter-final stage despite giving Tottenham Hotspur a big scare on Thursday night.
Dominic Solanke opened the scoring in the 15th minute before Dejan Kulusevski doubled Tottenham’s lead early in the second half.
Solanke then got his second of the night in the 54th minute against an increasingly beleaguered Manchester United.
However, Ruben Amorim’s charges battled back as Joshua Zirkzee and Amad Diallo made it 3-2 by the 70-minute mark.
It wasn’t enough though, with Spurs holding on and adding a cushion thanks to Son Heung-min’s 88th-minute goal direct from a corner.
And though Jonny Evans made it 4-3 deep into injury time with a header through Fraser Forster’s hands, it was too little too late.
Rasmus Hojlund started for Man United, with Zirkzee coming on later on in the game, and Red Devils fans commented on this during the match.

Manchester United fans want Joshua Zirkzee to be starting ahead of Rasmus Hojlund
Many Man United fans believed that Amorim should be starting Zirkzee ahead of Hojlund, claiming the Dutchman is a better forward than his teammate.
One supporter said “by the way Zirkzee is better than Hojlund”, while another wrote “although not that great, Zirkzee is 10 times the player Hojlund is”.
The calls kept coming, with one fan adding: “Absolutely no reason for Hojlund to be playing over Zirkzee”.
One elaborated: “Zirkzee is giving our final 3rd balance and I think he’s better than Hojlund up front.”
And another said: “Zirkzee should’ve started today instead of Hojlund. United needs 2 CBs, two 10’s and two WB’s.”
How the media rated Zirkzee display v Tottenham
Manchester World gave Zirkzee a score of 7 out of 10 for his efforts on the night.
‘A big impact from the bench,’ they wrote. ‘A smart header gave United a lift and shortly after he tapped in a goal but he should have been more alive between the posts.’
Likewise, Goal.com gave the Dutchman a rating of 7 out of 10.
They said: ‘On for the ineffective Hojlund and changed the game immediately with his pressing from the front, even if there was a bit of fortune about how United got on the scoresheet.’
Man United are next in action on Sunday when they host Bournemouth in the Premier League.
