Newcastle United have agreed a deal with Brazilian giants Sao Paulo for the six-month loan of full-back Jamal Lewis.
The 26-year-old Northern Ireland international’s loan move could mean that Kieran Tripper remains at the club at least until January.
Lewis is now the fourteenth player to depart St James’ Park throughout the summer transfer window, with the club only managing to bring in six new signings.
Newcastle defender Jamal Lewis joins Sao Paulo
The left-back joined Newcastle from Norwich City back in 2020 and has gone on to make 36 appearances for the club – only 28 of which were starts.
He is now the first British player to sign for the famous Brazilian club after spending last season on loan at Championship side Watford.
“When I found out about this opportunity, I immediately told my manager that I would like to come to Brazil,” Lewis told the Sao Paulo club website.
“It’s an honour to play for a giant like Sao Paulo and to be the first British athlete in the club’s history. I’m very excited to play for a three-time world-champion club. It’s an opportunity I couldn’t pass up.”
Sao Paulo currently sit sixth in the Brazilian Serie A with 41 points from 25 games, Lewis could be set to make his debut against Atletico Mineiro on September 13.
For now, the defender will be joining up with his international teammates as they prepare to face Luxembourg and Bulgaria in their upcoming Nations League fixtures.
