Rangers switch still on as confirmed contract signed amid 6-figure payment update - report

Liam Kelly is still available for nothing this summer and could join Rangers despite signing a new contract, according to the Daily Record.

The paper reported via their website on 8 June that the goalkeeper could still be snapped up by Philippe Clement to replace want-away Robby McCrorie, or the departing Jon McLaughlin, even though Motherwell confirmed he had agreed a new deal at Fir Park.

The Scottish Premiership club revealed on their official website a day earlier that Kelly, 28, had agreed a contract extension for the duration of Euro 2024, but said he would not be returning to the club for next season.

A member of Steve Clarke’s Scotland squad for the international tournament, the Daily Record reports that the move has been made or the purpose of securing the Steelmen a six-figure compensation payment from UEFA for his involvement and a return to Ibrox afterwards is still on the cards.

Rangers Review’s Chris Jack (24 May) had indicated that Kelly was likely to go to the Euros as a Gers player, but that will no longer be the case.

News that a player Rangers want to sign has instead agreed a new deal at this current club isn’t usually a positive development but this one shouldn’t be too much of an issue.

If his contract was presumably due to expire on 30 June then the extension likely only spans another fortnight to cover the 14 July final, so shouldn’t represent much of a hurdle if the Light Blues are going to bring him back to the club where he started as a youth.

On the whole it is not the most convenient for a major international tournament to be in progress at the start of a transfer window where Clement and Nils Koppen have serious work to do.

And with the clear focus on South American talent evident from the Belgian’s time in charge the upcoming Copa American is potentially another complicating factor, while the Olympics are also relevant for younger options in a packed summer.

If Rangers want to sign any players set for European involvement they could face increased competition or asking prices should their targets perform well, and equally if they bring in recruits who are called up for the later tournaments there is the risk of injury ahead of the new season.

That is potentially also the case with some current Ibrox stars though, and is one of the costs of doing business with players who are talented enough to feature internationally.

In other Rangers news, the Light Blues could lose four men at the same position as yet another possible exit emerges.
