Sergio Reguilon set to be offered Tottenham exit route by LaLiga club

Tottenham outcast Sergio Reguilon could finally take his leave in January after Getafe registered their interest, according to Mucho Deporte.

The Spanish outlet reported on 4 December that with Reguilon well down the pecking order in North London, the left-back is open to a return to his homeland with just six months left on his Spurs contract.

Getafe are willing to “negotiate hard” in order to sign the 27-year-old in the upcoming January window, and are preparing to launch either an official loan bid covering part of Reguilon’s wages.

The LaLiga side are also willing to discuss the prospect of Reguilon triggering the move via an early contract termination, but with the left-back still valued at £9.9million, a loan move looks the more likely.

Reguilon finally leaving the Lilywhites has been on the cards for a while, but few teams have offered a concrete route to the exit door to the extent that Getafe are proposing to do in January.

The out-of-favour defender hasn’t featured for Spurs since the 2021/22 season, quickly falling out of favour under Antonio Conte and not being given a single minute during Ange Postecoglou’s tenure.

Loan moves to Atletico Madrid, Manchester United and Brentford across the past three campaigns haven’t yielded permanent moves to any of those three clubs, leaving the left-back’s future in stasis.

There’s no doubt that Reguilon’s career has been intertwined with Madrid, coming through the Castilla system at Real and spending the 2022/23 campaign with Atletico – albeit making just 12 appearances.

The city’s third-most prominent side are now offering Reguilon a lifeline and a way out of North London, and given his departure is all-but guaranteed by next summer, the Spaniard must take this chance.

In other Tottenham news, Spurs have offered a two-year scholarship to a player who could be a direct replacement for Reguilon.
