Sources: Significant Ben Chilwell update tonight

Ben Chilwell is expected to find it very tough to get back into the Chelsea team, sources have told Football Insider.

The 27-year-old left-back is very much down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge and doesn’t fit the style of play that Enzo Maresca wants.

Marc Cucerella and summer signing Renato Veiga are both ahead of the England international, and only an injury or suspension will open the door for him.

Maresca has made his feelings on Chilwell publicly clear, but fans thought there was potential for him to return after he got back to training with the first team.

Chilwell isn’t expected to return to the starting line up regularly at Chelsea, and the defender is expected to make a decision on his future in January.

Sources have told Football Insider that lots of clubs are monitoring Chilwell’s situation closely.

Ben Chilwell could move on from Chelsea

Chilwell joined the Blues in 2020 from Leicester City and went on to play a pivotal role in the club winning the Champions League under Thomas Tuchel.

However, consistent injuries have derailed his momentum at both club and international level.

The Premier League giants had made Chilwell available for sale in the summer transfer window and even offered him to Man United.

Football Insider revealed that United ultimately turned down the chance to sign Chilwell and backed their own players.

Chelsea will be without Cucurella when club football returns, which could lead to an opportunity for Chilwell.

The left-back has yet to feature in the Premier League this season but did feature off the bench against Barrow in the EFL Cup.
