Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly has made another indication he wants to remain at the club as he looks to secure a stake in cricket franchise London Spirit.
That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider it would be a “cheap deal” compared to the Premier League side after the American has been linked with completing a full takeover at Stamford Bridge.
Sky News reported on 2 November Boehly is backing a bid by fellow Chelsea director Jonathan Goldstein to purchase a large stake in Lords-based franchise London Spirit.
The west London club’s chairman has been involved in a takeover battle recently with Clearlake Capital’s Behdad Eghbali after relations between the pair are believed to have soured.
Boehly owns a 12.8 per cent stake at Stamford Bridge, while Clearlake secured a 61.5 per cent shareholding when the £4.25billion takeover deal went through in May 2022.
Chelsea takeover has gone quiet after boardroom tensions
Borson believes Boehly’s interest in London Spirit is another sign of his commitment to Chelsea.
He told Football Insider: “It seems unlikely for somebody of his wealth to have that as your sole asset in London.
“He obviously likes the city and likes spending time here, so I think it might be a soft indicator he wants to stay at Chelsea.
“But that whole thing has gone very quiet overall since that very excitable announcement.
“We heard right from the start that it was all war between the two owners.
“Everything seems to have calmed down. I don’t know if it’s because they are winning a few more games on the pitch.
“Everything seems a bit more sensible in terms of the decisions they have made.
“I think it could suggest that he’s staying.
“But I think he was the one that was saying he does want to stay and he wanted to buy out Clearlake.
“I think you should read it as a sign he does want to commit to London if that story about buying London Spirit is true.
“It will be a cheap deal compared to Chelsea, that’s for sure.”
