Manchester United could have surprisingly paid less to sack Erik ten Hag last week than it would have cost them to dismiss him over the summer.
That is the view of former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider there has been some “misleading noises” around the Dutchman’s contract situation at Old Trafford.
The Athletic reported on 30 October sacking Ten Hag will cost Man United around £15million in compensation after he only penned a 12-month extension in July, taking his deal up until June 2026.
Ruben Amorim was appointed as the Dutchman’s successor on 1 November after Old Trafford chiefs agreed to pay Sporting Lisbon £9.25million in compensation.
The Portuguese, who will make the move to Manchester on 11 November, is the club’s sixth permanent manager since Sir Alex Ferguson’s 26-year reign ended with his retirement in 2013.
Man United could have agreed fixed fee with Erik ten Hag
Borson revealed United could have agreed a fixed compensation figure when Ten Hag extended his deal over the summer.
He told Football Insider: “I think there has been some slightly misleading noises around Ten Hag’s contract.
“It was an extension and was an option effectively.
“I suspect it cost them no more than it would have done had they sacked him in the summer.
“It’s actually possible that what would have happened is they reduced their overall cost by extending the agreement bizarrely.
“We are not sure about that, but it wouldn’t be beyond the realms that what they did in the renegotiation was they fixed in a compensation number.
“A lot of these contracts have what’s known as liquidated damages clauses, which means there is a pre-agreed termination that will kick in in the event that the person’s deal is terminated.
“I suspect that they knew all the way along what that cost was going to be regardless of the length of his contract remaining.”
