Rangers’ “biggest issue” is how they are tactically set up, but sacking Philippe Clement wouldn’t solve that issue, according to Stevie Clifford.
The Light Blues have headed into the international break five points adrift of their Old Firm rivals Celtic after the disappointing 3-0 defeat to their Glasgow rivals at Parkhead last time out.
While some pundits and journalists have called for Clement to be sacked, Four Lads Had A Dream host Clifford has criticised the Belgian but insists he doesn’t want to see him lose his job at Ibrox.
Writing for the Rangers Review (6 September) he said: “The biggest issue is tactically. Collectively and individually, we are being set up in a way that just clearly isn’t working.
“Less than a 50% win rate in the last 20-plus games is a clear indication of that. I’m never going to be a tactical genius, I’m never going to talk about what the team should be doing and isn’t, but I can only go by what I think I am seeing, which is very little shape and very little cohesion.
“We don’t look like we are organised, we can’t follow runners and we can’t win our battles. When we don’t tick those boxes, players just revert into their shells and accept their fate.
“The jury is well and truly out on Philippe Clement and his win rate in the last twenty games is alarming at best. But the board have made it clear they back him.
“To make something clear, I can question his decisions but this is NOT another case where I’m saying sack him. I don’t believe that, but it would be naïve not to question some decisions.”
Will Philippe Clement exit Rangers amid Ibrox developments?
As Clifford suggests, you don’t have to be a master tactician to recognise that this Rangers team simply haven’t been set up well from a tactical standpoint over the last few months.
Too often, the Gers struggle to create any meaningful goal-scoring opportunities in the final third and are far too easy to pick apart defensively, especially when faced with high-level opposition in European or Old Firm fixtures.
While the blame has to lie with the manager, there has been very little in the past to suggest that a change in manager would do everything to change things at Ibrox for the better.
Clement is under pressure and he will be until results begin to improve and silverware begins to return to the Blues side of Glasgow, but that doesn’t mean that he should necessarily lose his job immediately.
Hopefully, the Gers will look better tactically after the international break and the Belgian will manage to get pundits and supporters back onside with some better results and performances.
