'Stunned' - Pundit wants 'Top Class' Rangers striker signing & backs £5m ace for Ibrox success

Kris Boyd has backed Danilo to become a key man at Rangers after last season was wrecked by injury despite the need for a new “top class striker” in the transfer market.

In his Scottish Sun column on 5 July the Sky Sports pundit admitted “I would be stunned” if Philippe Clement hadn’t made the position a priority during his summer overhaul and called on the Belgian to bring in a high-quality new arrival.

But he also highlighted the fact that £5million “marquee signing” Danilo was brought in with a “big reputation” last summer and impressed while being seen as a number one option by both Michael Beale and Clement before he was ruled out.

The 25-year-old scored six and assisted five in all competitions before a facial fracture and then a knee injury destroyed his campaign.

But ex-Ibrox goal scorer Boyd believes the “aggressive” and “brave” Brazilian will justify his transfer fee next term, with Cyriel Dessers looking likely to leave amid growing transfer interest [Rangers Review, 3 July].

There were positive signs last term without Danilo ever getting into a proper rhythm in order to see whether he could be the 30-plus-goal striker the Light Blues need.

Dessers managed to net 22 times when left as the last number nine standing down the stretch but there were nagging concerns that it should have been far more.

The confirmed arrival of Hamza Igamane has begun the job of revamping the striking corps but with transfer flop Sam Lammers also expected to be sold after rehabilitating himself out on loan the youngster surely needs another, more experienced, option to follow him in.

Rangers like Bojan Miovski but he may be hard to land while Lawrence Shankland should be significantly easier but the club appear to have reservations about a move [Scottish Daily Mail, 1 July].

Danilo saw his first season at Rangers derailed by multiple serious injuries.

Igamane, a fit-again Danilo, and a third man with a record something like the two Scottish Premiership stars might look like a strong set of options for Clement to look to overturn Celtic, especially with a deal to bring Abdallah Sima back on the wing potentially no longer out of reach.

In other Rangers news, the Light Blues could now sell a top earner this summer as a club eyes up an “instrumental” signing from Ibrox.
