Bill Leckie has mooted the end of Cyriel Dessers’ Rangers career after what he did against Celtic on Sunday.

With the game 3-3 after 120 minutes in the Scottish League Cup final, it needed penalties for the Hoops to get their hands on the trophy.

They edged the shootout 5-4 with Dessers not taking any of the five spot kicks even though Jack Butland volunteered to take one.

Leckie, a Scottish Sun journalist wrote on 16 December: “It was as unbelievable as it is unforgivable.

“We’re talking about a centre-forward being on the pitch for a cup final shootout – but leaving the fifth kick to his keeper.

“Even at the death knell of a showdown as far-fetched as this one turned out to be, you’d think it was a plot twist too far.

“Yet that’s what Cyriel Dessers did when the chips were down here. And I don’t see how his Rangers career recovers from it.

“Why else does a manager bring his No9 off the bench in extra-time if not to win him the game?

“What else is he there for but to put the ball in the net?”

Cyriel Dessers has driven the Rangers fans further away

Dessers has already been a figure of contention among Gers fans due to his inconsistent performances since joining the club.

His failure to step up and take a penalty in the crucial final against Celtic, has only deepened the rift between him and the supporters.

In a match where every moment counts, leaving the responsibility of the fifth penalty to the goalkeeper was seen as a significant lapse in judgment, especially for a striker whose primary role is to score goals.

This incident has not only questioned his mental fortitude but also his commitment to the team when it matters most.

Given the backlash and the sentiment expressed, the Nigerian’s position at Ibrox appears increasingly untenable.

A January transfer could well be on the cards as both parties might look to part ways, especially if this episode further isolates him from the fanbase.

In other Rangers news, a first-team player could now be ruled out for months, potentially even needing surgery.
