Ange Postecoglou might have to consider dropping Tottenham defender Cristian Romero.
The Argentinian is arguably one of Spurs’ most important players.
However, after his recent performances, Postecoglou might have to do something he likely never thought he would – bench the World Cup winner.
He was arguably at fault for Leicester’s equaliser in the 1-1 draw at the King Power Stadium (19 August) and wasn’t at his best in the 2-1 defeat to Newcastle United at St James’ Park (1 September) either.
And on a day which matters more than most, the North London derby, Romero’s defensive frailties were once again exposed as Gabriel scored the winner for Arsenal at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium (15 September).
Therefore, when Spurs host Brentford (21 September), Postecoglou might be wise to take Romero out of the spotlight.
Ange Postecoglou to axe Tottenham star Cristian Romero
It wasn’t just the weakness that Romero showed as he was outmuscled by Gabriel for Arsenal’s opener, his overall performance was far from ideal.
As per Sofascore, while Romero did make two clearances and two tackles, he was also dribbled past once and provided just one accurate long ball from three attempts.
He also gave away a foul and only won three of his five ground duels.
He did look positive on the ball, completing 96 per cent of his passes with one of those key. However, he hasn’t been at his best defensively this season, and Spurs are suffering as a result.
In other Tottenham news, the club have been backed to sign one player as a replacement for Ben Davies.
