'Wow' - Shearer shares verdict on Everton star Pickford after England first half v Netherlands

Alan Shearer has shared his verdict after the Everton goalkeeper conceded the opener in the EURO semi-final for England against the Netherlands.

Xavi Simons picked up the ball from Declan Rice and broke forward before smashing the ball past the England keeper and into the top corner.

Shearer, reporting for BBC Sport (10 July) has suggested that Pickford was left helpless by the quality of the strike.

He said: “Wow. What a strike. Xavi Simons couldn’t of hit it any better, the shot was so inviting.

“It is pinged into the right-hand-side of the net and Jordan Pickford had no chance, Simons takes the ball of Declan Rice and it then opens up.”

The Toffees number one is always on top form for England and the 2024 European Championships have been no different.

Despite the Three Lions not being on top form so far this tournament, the goalkeeper has done a lot of things right so far.

This has included making a top penalty save in the shootout against Switzerland which allowed Gareth Southgate’s side to make it through to the semi-final.

Pickford will have been frustrated to have conceded so early on against the Netherlands but he had no chance given the quality of Simon’s strike.

England levelled the game through a Harry Kane penalty after he was kicked by Denzel Dumfries inside the area.

Going in at 1-1 at halftime, Southgate can be largely pleased with his side’s performance despite going behind early on.

The Everton man, Pickford hasn’t had much to do but is always someone that the Three Lions can count on when they need him.
