Ex-PL CEO: Man City could make sensational move to new league

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has suggested Man City could sensationally play in a Saudi-run “global league” in future.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted the European Super League is “dead” and cannot be revitalised despite City’s fall-out with the Premier League.

Football Insider revealed last week (7 June) that Man City could rejoin the Super League project as early as next season if their legal battle against the English top-flight fails.

The Premier League champions have pursued legal action against the Premier League in a bid to end the Associated Party Transaction (ATP) rules.

City’s relationship with the Premier League has already been strained by their alleged 115 financial charges – which are due to be heard in November across six weeks.

Man City could quit Premier League to play in ‘global’ competition, says Wyness

Wyness claimed he can’t see the European Super League being revived after the initial project was quashed in 2021.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “As far as I’m concerned, the Super League is dead.

“If they want to start it again with Real Madrid, then God bless them.

“Juventus have quit the idea and rejoined the European Clubs Association, so I don’t know who City would be playing.

“Maybe they’d play Real Madrid all around the world like the Harlem Globetrotters.

“They’ve damaged themselves so much with this lawsuit. If they go for another Super League situation, they’re in for some severe penalties.

“I think they’re more likely to wait for some sort of global league – and that plan is likely to come from Saudi Arabia.

“Revitalising the European Super League won’t work, and it won’t be good for City if they push in that way.”
