Ferguson 'Disappointed' at transfer news coming out of Rangers

Barry Ferguson has been left “disappointed” by the transfer news coming out of Rangers that Todd Cantwell has requested to leave the club.

Speaking on Go Radio’s Football Show on 30 July, the former Gers skipper added that while he is disappointed, there is no point in keeping players that don’t want to be at Ibrox.

Philippe Clement has recently confirmed the news himself at a press conference, with Cantwell now seemingly on his way out of Glasgow.

Ferguson said: “The manager has made that clear. [Cantwell’s] obviously put a transfer request in.

“Personally I’m disappointed. I think there’s something in Todd Cantwell. But listen, there’s something obviously not right there. He’s asked to move on and you don’t keep hold of a player who wants to move on.

“If somebody puts in a transfer request or says ‘I’d like to move on’, you need to care about who wants to be at the club, not the ones that don’t want to.”

Todd Cantwell gap will need to be filled at Rangers

Rangers are in a tough spot after Cantwell’s decision to move on. Speaking after the defeat to Birmingham City in a pre-season friendly, Philippe Clement made it clear that they need a new playmaker [Daily Record, 25 July].

This is because Cantwell’s departure leaves a significant gap in the number 10 position.

Only Alex Lowry and Tom Lawrence are left to fill that creative role, but there are some other options.

One of them is Mohamed Diomande. The Ivory Coast international has already shown he can make things happen with his sharp passes and ability to finish with either foot. At £4.3million, he’s proving to be a smart investment.

Behind Diomande, Rangers are working on securing Joan Jordan from Sevilla and have been impressed with Connor Barron during pre-season. Another potential solution is moving Dujon Sterling into midfield.

No matter which option they go for, the Gers must find the right mix quickly to ensure they remain competitive.

Cantwell’s likely departure is a big loss, but with smart adjustments, Rangers can quickly adapt.
