James Tavernier could be the “next” player to leave Rangers as the transfer “ball” begins to roll at Ibrox, according to Barry Ferguson.
The Light Blues captain has been surrounded by speculation throughout the summer transfer window and was the subject of a new bid from Trabzonspor after the first was rejected by the Gers [Rangers Review, 23 July].
Philippe Clement’s side are willing to sell the 32-year-old for the right price and Daily Record pundit Ferguson believes the Englishman could follow Connor Goldson and Sam Lammers out of the exit door.
Writing for the Daily Record on Saturday (27 July) he said: “I wish it had started back in May when last season ended but football is never that straightforward.
“What we have seen over the last two or three days, though, tells me that the ball is finally beginning to roll.
“Connor Goldson’s transfer has been green-lighted, Sam Lammers is on his way back to Holland, Ianis Hagi looks like returning to Fiorentina, James Tavernier could be next and Clement has revealed that Todd Cantwell wants out too.”
Will James Tavernier exit Rangers amid Ibrox transfer rumours?
As Ferguson suggested, it has taken longer than everyone expected, but the bigger summer overhaul at Rangers has now properly got underway and it doesn’t seem to be showing any signs of stopping in the coming weeks.
The Gers fanbase will always be divided over whether or not the time has come for Tavernier to leave Glasgow, but it does feel like his performances have been getting worse and worse with each passing season.
Yes, he’s still a goal threat and his set-piece delivery is excellent, but he has always been suspect defensively and in the biggest games of the season that is starting to cost both him and the Gers.
With Dujon Sterling waiting in the wings after an excellent debut season at Ibrox, it feels as though the time has come for the right-back baton and captain’s armband to be passed onto somebody new ahead of the new campaign.
Before that can happen though, somebody has to agree a fee with Rangers. Whether that is Trabzonspor or another club waiting in the wings, it could happen very soon as Ferguson mooted.
