Finance Expert shares 'Astonishing' Everton verdict as report details PL legal spend

Finance expert Stefan Borson has labelled the Premier League’s legal spend for the first independent hearing against Everton as “astonishing”.

It was reported by the Times (10 June) that the Premier League has spent almost £30million on legal counsel again its own clubs last season to uphold its Profit and Sustainability rules.

The Toffees were hit with two separate breaches, the first of which the Time said cost the Premier League £5m as Everton were hit with an initial 10-point reduction, a punishment reduced to six following a partially upheld appeal.

Reacting to the story on his official X account (10 June), Borson wrote: “As previously explained, there is no inequality of arms in these cases. To spend £5m on Everton 1 is particularly astonishing.

“Worth remembering the entire Independent Football Regulator annual budget is £10m. Yet people still saying they should handle these cases. Impossible.”

Premier League legal spend on Everton is mind boggling

Let us just let this sink in for a minute.

Assuming the Times report is definitely accurate, the Premier League spent £5m on its legal standing for the first PSR case against Everton.

Toffees supporters have long felt hard done by over the Premier League’s PSR stance and this news is unlikely to do much to alter the view that they have been particularly hard done by.

To spend so much against its own clubs seems like a situation that is extremely unhealthy. Of course every competition has rules to uphold but such expense is baffling.

Last season was a minefield of off-field issues for Everton and right now there are a host of parties looking to buy the club after the failed acquisition of 777 Partners.

Hopefully, one comes to fruition and the club can start finding some stability off the pitch to avoid lengthy battles with the Premier League in the future.

In other Everton news, a former Chelsea man has been identified as a potential replacement for an exit-linked Goodison star.
