Former Rangers goalkeeper Robby McCrorie will be hoping life after Ibrox improves following his mistake for Kilmarnock on Thursday (11 July).

The stopper, who has admirably taken a pay cut in search of regular football at Killie, was at fault with an absolute howler to help Ayr United to a 3-2 friendly win over his side.

As reported by the Scottish Sun, boss Derek McInnes insists McCrorie will recover from his error as the team look to iron out unnecessary mistakes before the Scottish Premiership campaign kicks off.

Whilst the shocker does not define the 26-year-old as a goalkeeper entirely, Rangers fans will be relieved that McCrorie’s mistake was not made at Ibrox and it does justify his sale further, as if it needed further justification given his lack of time between the sticks.

Having come through the ranks with the Light Blues, it’s unfortunately unsurprising for McCrorie that he never really had a breakthrough, so to speak – instead embarking on five separate loans and being confined to just one cup appearance in a dismal season last year.

The Gers will by contrast be desperate to keep hold of Jack Butland, who has been linked with a return south of the border to the Premier League following the snub of calls to reinstall him into the England squad.

The club hold a good hand on Butland, who still has three years remaining on his current Ibrox deal.

Liam Kelly has arrived from Motherwell, which would have put McCrorie down the pecking order even further, and it’s testament to the former Scotland youth international that he made himself available for transfer to seek further game time.

From a Killie perspective, they’ll be hoping it’s a one-off or the struggle for match action will continue.

In other Rangers news, plans are beginning to bear fruit on the Hampden Park to Ibrox return.
