Joe Thomas has shared a new Sean Dyche concern at Everton ahead of the showdown with West Ham United.

The Toffees make the trip to the London Stadium on Saturday (9 November) as they look to head into the international break with a win and bounce back from their disappointing defeat to Southampton last time out.

Although the Irons aren’t in great form themselves, Liverpool Echo journalist Thomas admits he has been left worried by Dyche’s suggestion the performance against the Saints was what he has been looking for so far this season.

Speaking on the Royal Blue YouTube channel (8 November, 30:50) he said: “My big takeaway from yesterday that has formed some of my coverage from the press conference at Finch Farm is having spoken to Dyche about it and again and having seen his response to other reporters, it seems to be the belief that this week’s work has been founded upon the idea that Southampton was pretty much what Dyche wanted and they were unlucky to not come away with more.

“That’s a bit of a concern for me because I think one of the fears about Southampton was that Beto’s last-minute goal against Fulham might have allowed him to come away from that game thinking, Everton haven’t done that bad and the focus was on a brilliant moment from Beto and the resistance of the side to keep going.

“Really the focus should have been on the fact Everton were woeful for 94 minutes in that game. I think lessons weren’t learned against Fulham, that had an influence on the Southampton defeat and I think the big question for me is whether or not that will continue into this game?”

What has happened to Everton manager Sean Dyche at Goodison Park?

As Thomas suggests, there have been times this season when the Toffees have been nowhere near their best but found a way to somehow claim all three points.

While Dyche and his team deserve credit for persevering in matches and producing last-minute goals as they did against Fulham a few weeks ago, that shouldn’t mask what have been otherwise bleak displays in the Premier League.

The Toffees were nowhere near good enough against the Saints last time out. While Beto missed a golden chance to give the Blues the lead in the second half, the chances created by Dyche’s side were few and far between.

When it mattered, they couldn’t stop Adam Armstrong from striking home to hand Russell Martin’s side their first three points of the season.

Dyche may not think that the loss at St Mary’s and the draw with Fulham were quite as disastrous as some fans have suggested, but the Blues boss cannot think that is the standard required of his team.

Everton have to show signs of improvement against West Ham.
