John Wenham: Tottenham 19y/o to be handed 'Huge' opportunity in behind-closed-doors clash

John Wenham claims Ashley Phillips is set to be handed an opportunity to impress Ange Postecoglou at Tottenham.

The owner of the reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose has suggested that the 19-year-old will start in an upcoming behind-closed-doors friendly.

As per Alasdair Gold via Football London (8 July), Tottenham will take on Cambridge United at Hotspur Way at midday on Saturday (13 July).

And Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – feels that this will provide Phillips with an opportunity to prove himself.

“All three of our centre-backs have been at the Euros or Copa America,” Wenham said.

“That will offer Phillips a huge opportunity to prove himself against Cambridge United on Saturday.

“I imagine we will see Phillips for the next few pre-season games.

“He will look to grab that chance with two hands, and I don’t imagine there will be any hurrying up from Tottenham in terms of a loan for him at the moment.”

Phillips enjoyed a productive loan spell in the EFL Championship with Plymouth Argyle last season.

With the UEFA Europa League to come this season, there could be an opportunity for the centre-back to play first-team football at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Spurs only have three recognised centre-backs, and if they don’t sign anyone in the current window, Postecoglou might want to keep Phillips around as a fourth option.

Therefore, these friendlies could be pivotal for the young defender ahead of next season.
