King shares 'Difficult' Everton admission as behind-the-scenes shift is detailed

Bryan King believes Everton must be careful about the quality of young players they are signing from other clubs.

The ex-Goodison scout wants to see the Toffees focus on bringing players through from within their own ranks.

As reported by The Athletic (12 July), Everton have recently signed youth players from the likes of Arsenal and Manchester United.

In fact, of the 12 players handed scholarship terms ahead of next season, just five of those came through Everton’s ranks, which is a sign of a shift in approach from the club.

However, King – speaking exclusively to Goodison News – has suggested the Toffees should try and remain focussed on local talent.

“I’d have thought it would be difficult to sign top young players from clubs such as Manchester United and Arsenal,” King said.

“It suggests that these are perhaps unwanted players from these clubs. Therefore, I think Everton need to be very careful about the quality of the players they’re bringing in.

“If United and Arsenal thought these players were good enough they would have kept hold of them.

“There is a big catchment area and Everton should be competing with the likes of Liverpool to sign the top young players in the area. It has always been known that the club have a good academy.

“Just look at the players they have produced and sold, most notably Wayne Rooney. They have a good record bringing players through their own ranks, and should try to continue doing that.”

The club must ensure they maintain a balance when it comes to their youth approach behind the scenes.

While opportunities might arise to go and sign talent from some of the Premier League’s biggest clubs, they must try and remain focussed on local players too.

If young players living in and around the area don’t see a pathway for themselves with the Toffees, they are less likely to sign for the club.

As a result, this could see Everton miss out on the chance to sign some young, local talent.

Therefore, the club needs to continue promoting from within their own walls as well as going out and signing players from other academies across the country.

In other Everton news, another Premier League club have discussed a deal for Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
