'Lammers-style' - David Edgar moots Rangers flop signing for January exit

Rangers might now look at letting Robin Propper leave Ibrox on loan in the January transfer window, according to David Edgar.

The Heart & Hand host suggested via X on 27 October that the struggling centre-back could be in line for a quick-fire exit at the first opportunity since his summer arrival from FC Twente, much like fellow Dutchman Sam Lammers did a year ago.

Propper, 31, had a terrible game in the 2-1 win over St Mirren, in the latest unconvincing performance since his £1.5million move, and after Edgar branded the showing a “nightmare hour” he suggested an exit could be on the cards in the near future.

He wrote: “Might be a Lammers-style loan in January.”

Lammers arrived as part of Michael Beale’s overhaul two summers ago for £3million [Sky Sports] but scored just twice for the Light Blues in 31 appearances and was packed off back to the Eredivisie with FC Utrecht in the winter window, where he returned to form and ultimately made a permanent move to Twente for up to £4million [Sky Sports, 26 July] as Propper left.

Philippe Clement signing flops at Rangers

If the Gers could come out of the Propper situation in the same way they managed to escape the Lammers deal then they would probably be delighted.

The forward was reborn back in the Netherlands and the £2.5m initial fee Rangers banked was way above anything that looked possible this time last year, while the possibility of actually making a profit seemed fanciful.

Unless Propper suddenly turns a corner in the coming weeks and Scottish football clicks for him it is tempting to conclude that he is another Dutchman who is simply not well suited to the league, especially considering he had previously spent his entire senior career in his home country.

Whether there would be a market for his services remains to be seen, but he was FC Twente’s captain and they weren’t best pleased to lose him to a release clause so it wouldn’t be a shock if they were willing to bring him back.

Robin Propper could leave Rangers on loan in January.

But whether he stays or goes it still leaves Rangers with the problem of still not having the commanding centre-back they have long needed.

John Souttar has developed and now looks the clear first choice, but he was caught out for the Kilmarnock goal in the 1-0 loss at Rugby Park that put Philippe Clement’s job back on the agenda so is far from infallible.

Leon Balogun can put in a decent performance when needed but also has his limitations and is going to be 37 in the summer, while Clinton Nsiala arrived in the summer and vanished into the B Team for the foreseeable future.

Neraysho Kasanwirjo shifted over from right-back to the centre against St Mirren when Clement finally pulled the plug on Propper’s night and has the chance to stake a claim now, but the position group is still filled with questions.

And as Propper was the replacement for the long-expected exit for Connor Goldson it is impossible to say, at this stage, that the manager and Nils Koppen got it wrong to sign the Dutchman this summer.

In other Rangers news, another senior first-team ace has been told he must leave the club permanently.
