Man Utd threaten Everton over Branthwaite deal amid new bid update - report

Manchester United are “threatening” to abandon their attempts to sign Jarrad Branthwaite from Everton, according to The Mirror.

A report from Ryan Taylor on the paper’s website on 15 June says that the Old Trafford club are “poised” to return with an improved bid after seeing their opening offer, said to be worth £43million with add-ons included, was rejected at Goodison Park.

However, they will reportedly tell the Toffees that they are willing to move onto other targets if a deal can’t be done on what they believe are “reasonable” terms.

United, who have new minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe in charge of their football operations, have “no intention” of meeting Everton’s asking price of £70m.

Jean-Clair Todibo at Nice, Gleison Bremer at Juventus, Lille’s Leny Yoro, and Crystal Palace’s England international Marc Guehi are named as possible alternatives to Branthwaite.

New bid incoming at Everton from Old Trafford

Assuming the Toffees’ stance that they aren’t under pressure to sell the 21-year-old is accurate the threat that United will move on if a cut-price deal isn’t done looks an empty one.

Everton are hoping to secure a move for Amadou Onana to aid their hopes of keeping Branthwaite for anything other than a large fee, and multiple approaches are now coming in for the Belgian midfielder [Times, 14 June].

So if the intention in Manchester is to look for a cheap deal and then move on if it proves impossible they may have to follow through with that plan.

Everton
Jarrad Branthwaite has been a stand-out performer for Everton.

It would seemingly be the ideal outcome for Sean Dyche and Kevin Thelwell to sell Onana for a profit and be able to hold firm on attempts to take Branthwaite from Goodison Park.

Developments are starting to shape up in that direction, and if United can’t or won’t pay the England international’s price tag then that could be the end of the conversation.

All sorts of things can change during a transfer window so no outcome can be entirely ruled out, but the current brinkmanship between Everton and Manchester United doesn’t point towards a deal.

In other Everton news, a club is now hoping the Toffees will come forward with a transfer offer for an international forward who is available to move this summer.
