Daniel Farke has given the green light for Leeds United to sign a free agent in the coming weeks, sources have told Football Insider.
Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed the 47-year-old has undergone a U-turn after initially being against signing a free agent.
Farke was reluctant to bring in a free agent as getting them up to pace can be difficult after a player has a period out of the game.
The Yorkshire giants might now be forced to bring someone in due to the injury crisis they are dealing with in central midfield.
The Championship side will be without Ethan Ampadu and Ilia Gruev until next year due to knee injuries, stretching Farke’s options.
Farke has been relying on Ao Tanaka and Joe Rothwell as his midfield partnership since those injury issues, but if they suffer any niggles then he will be without any clear option.
Leeds United are considering a new free agent signing
The 33-year-old midfielder has played under Farke before during their time at Borussia Monchengladbach, and he could provide some depth in defensive midfield.
The Whites had no problem picking up three points on Friday (18 October) as club football returned, regardless of their injury issues.
Rothwell and Tanaka played the full 90 minutes at Elland Road as Leeds went on to defeat Sheffield United 2-0.
In other news, ‘Leeds dressing room’ have made their feelings clear to Illan Meslier.
