Ange Postecoglou cannot start Timo Werner again after his display for Tottenham as they beat Manchester United 3-0 at Old Trafford on Sunday (29 September).

It was the perfect afternoon for Postecoglou and his players in Manchester.

After the pressure the Australian has been under in recent times, this felt like a much-needed win for the North London club.

What was even more impressive was that they did it without their captain Son Heung-min, who missed the match through injury.

Yet another goal from Brennan Johnson, in addition to strikes from Dejan Kulusevski and Dominic Solanke – who made it three in three – secured maximum points for Spurs.

However, Werner’s performance was a real sour point for Tottenham on what was an otherwise perfect afternoon.

With Son and Wilson Odobert unavailable, the German was given the nod. However, his poor performance demonstrated that he shouldn’t start another match for Tottenham.

Depending on how long Son and Odobert spend on the sidelines, Postecoglou will need to find a different solution to playing without them, with Werner certainly not the answer.

On an afternoon where confidence was flowing through the Spurs team, with Postecoglou’s side dominating the match, the on-loan forward still struggled to make an impression.

As per Sofascore, the forward missed two big chances, twice finding himself one-on-one with Andre Onana and twice being denied, and Gary Neville was less than impressed with what he saw.

While commenting live on Sky Sports’ coverage of the match, the ex-Manchester United defender said (29 September, 5:09 pm), “He should have done better, I just never fancied him”.

Furthermore, he was successful with just 40 per cent of his dribbles and completed just 71 per cent of his passes. In addition, the 28-year-old was only able to provide one accurate cross from three attempts, with both of his long balls forward inaccurate.

And defensively he was just as poor, winning just two of his seven ground duels and giving possession away 19 times.

After watching that, Postecoglou surely has no choice but to leave him on the bench when Spurs travel to Ferencváros in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday (3 October).

Werner can make an impact as a substitute. However, he has proven he shouldn’t be starting.
