Exclusive: West Brom in talks to sign Everton defender on loan

West Brom are in talks with Everton over a loan deal for defender Mason Holgate, sources have told Football Insider.

Everton are open to offers for Holgate after he spent the second half of last season on loan at Sheffield United.

Football Insider revealed on 30 August the 27-year-old was expected to join French club Lyon before the transfer collapsed.

West Brom are now looking to take Holgate back to The Hawthorns after he previously enjoyed a loan spell with the club in 2019.

Carlos Corberan is hoping to bolster his defensive options before Friday’s 11pm transfer deadline after opening talks to sign the centre-back on a temporary basis.

Holgate isn’t part of Sean Dyche’s plans moving forward and his contract at Goodison Park is set to expire in June 2025.

Holgate was previously viewed as a strong candidate to feature in the Everton defence for a number of years to come after signing from Barnsley in 2015.

But after putting in several promising performances in his early days on Merseyside, his career has stalled in recent years.

The former England youth international joined Southampton on loan last summer, but he only made seven appearances in all competitions for Russell Martin’s side in the first half of the campaign.

That led to him linking up with Sheffield United in the January transfer window, where he started in nine of his 10 outings.

But Holgate was unable to help prevent Chris Wilder’s side from being relegated after they finished rock bottom of the Premier League table.

Despite coming off the bench in Everton’s opening-day defeat against Brighton on 17 August, Dyche is open to letting the defender head out on loan again this season.

West Brom are now in talks to sign Holgate before the transfer window slams shut after he previously made 23 appearances for the club during his time at The Hawthorns.
