Man City 'want to blow up the Premier League' - ex-PL CEO

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has insisted Man City winning their legal challenge would make Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) “completely pointless”.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed the Premier League champions could make their revenue “whatever they want it to be” through commercial deals.

Man City have launched unprecedented legal action against the Premier League in an attempt to end Associated Party Transaction (APT) rules – which the club claims are unlawful.

APT rules attempt to prevent clubs from inflating commercial deals through companies linked with ownership groups.

Under current PSR rules, clubs are only allowed to lose £105million over three years before incurring punishment – but City have registered huge profits in recent seasons.

Man City are acting out of ‘pure greed’, says Wyness

The two-week hearing starts next week (10 June).

When asked what City winning the case would mean, Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “What it would mean is that PSR becomes completely pointless.

“If the new rule is you can only spend 85% of your revenue on players, for instance. City can make their revenue whatever they want it to be. It’s meaningless.

“It just doesn’t make sense.

“The whole case seems to be about exploding the rules in the Premier League. These are things which have served the league well since its formation in 1992.

“Clubs have voted and decisions have been reached. All these things have been successful.

“City want to blow it all up purely for their own greed.

“They’re in a dominant position right now, and for them to take it even further – it’s really galling.”
